Rome has its ‘Three Coins in the Fountain’ but Cork does it differently and it’s a case of ‘As Many Coins as you Want’ at The Lough for a very special charity fundraiser this June Bank Holiday weekend. In support of Cork City Hospitals’ Children’s Club, members of the public are being invited to ‘Lap The Lough’ by creating a full circle of Euro coins in a ring of hope that will help bring sick children to Disneyland Paris.
Lap the Lough will take place from 11am to 2pm on Monday 2nd June at The Lough, Cork.
“Break into your change jar or piggy bank to bring €2 or €1 coins to this novel fundraiser, or you can exchange your notes or cards for coins onsite to create a ring right around the inside path of the Lough” explained organiser Ernest Cantillon.
Volunteers will be on hand to direct you to your very own station around The Lough, where you’ll get to place the coins yourself, metre by metre, in a powerful symbol of unity, compassion, and community spirit
The event is being organised by former Lord Mayor Mick Finn, Ernest Cantillon, Pat Fitzgibbon, John Looney, Eimear McCarthy and Emer O’Mahony, who will bring businesses and the wider Cork community together with the additional help of The Lough Scouts and The Lough Credit Union to achieve their goal for the charity.
Cork City Hospitals’ Children’s Club works tirelessly to make dreams come true for young patients, organising magical experiences like trips to Euro Disney and once-in-a-lifetime adventures. Now, with your help, we can give even more children something to smile about.
“There’s something very special about this event,” says John Looney, long-time supporter of the club. “It’s about showing up, giving what you can, and doing something simple—but powerful—for kids who really need a lift.”
Ernest Cantillon, one of the event organisers, added: “We are hoping to literally surround The Lough with kindness. Whether you give €2 or €200, you’re part of something magical.”
If you can’t join the event in person, advance donations are hugely appreciated and will help lay the groundwork (and the coins!) before the big day so involve your local club, workplace, school or community group to help raise enough coins to Lap The Lough on June 2nd. Business and organisation donations can be made through the below link or by emailing lapthelough@gmail.com.
